Sleep Disorders and Insomnia

Sleep disorders cause more than just sleepiness.  A lack of restorative rest can cause accidents on the job and on the road; affect your relationships, health, and mental prowess; and make you feel generally “disconnected” to the world around you.  While insomnia is the best-known sleep disorder, over 100 types of sleep disorders actually exist.  The most common sleep disorders include insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and narcolepsy.  A doctor who specializes in sleep problems is most skilled in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders.  Most sleep disorders can be treated effectively, so you can finally get that good night's sleep you need.

Sleep appears necessary for our nervous systems to work properly.  Sleep may help the body conserve energy and other resources that the immune system needs to mount an attack.  Insomnia includes any combination of difficulty with falling asleep, staying asleep, intermittent wakefulness and early-morning awakening.  People, who don't get enough sleep, face changes in their blood chemistry that lead to an increased appetite.  More sleep may be one of the best ways to prevent this and other health problems.

Sleeping Disorders

Understanding the factors that affect sleep in health and disease also may lead to revolutionary new therapies for sleep disorders and to ways of overcoming jet lag and the problems associated with shift work.  Poor sleep is often a sign of some malfunctioning and may signal either minor or serious medical or psychiatric disorders.  Many industrial and automobile accidents are related to undiagnosed and untreated disorders of sleep.  Most sleep disorders, whether caused by physical or mental factors, can be treated or managed effectively once they are properly diagnosed.  Treatment of sleep disorders varies, depending on the specific sleep disorder, but may include psychological strategies as well as medications.

Insomnia

Insomnia, the most common sleep complaint, is the feeling that you have not slept well or long enough.  Insomnia may be caused by stress, a change in time zones or sleep schedule, poor bedtime habits, or an underlying medical or psychiatric condition.  Depression is a very common cause of insomnia and can usually be treated with medication, cognitive behavioral therapy, or interpersonal therapy.  In most cases, insomnia can be helped by improving bedtime habits, relieving stress, and relaxation exercises.  Caffeinated drinks such as coffee and drugs such as diet pills and decongestants stimulate some parts of the brain and can cause insomnia, or an inability to sleep.
