Sleep Medications

There are various medications available to those suffering from problems.   The effects of not getting enough sleep  include daytime symptoms such as:  tiredness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, or lack of energy.  The person suffering from problems may be prone to accident, health problems, or depression.   People with sleeping problems could greatly benefit from medications. Some common medications include the following: tricyclic-antidepressents, benzodiazepines, serotonin boosting medications, muscle relaxants, analgesics, various other medications, and topical creams.  These medications have different purposes and may produce negative side effects upon the user. 

Tricyclic-antidepressents may have intolerable side effects on some people.  These side effects may include dry mouth and eyes, headache, heart rate abnormalities, increased sensitivity to light, constipations, drowsiness, or weight gain.  If these side effects do not subside after a couple of weeks of taking the medication, the patient should consult his or her doctor about trying a different medication.

Bensodiazepines could have side effects such as depression, impaired coordination, drowsiness, muscular weakness, concentration problems,

and impaired memory.  Benzdiazepines have also been shown to be addictive.

Serotonin boosting medications may produce side effect such as:  headache, mood swings, sexual difficulties, insomnia, nausea and stomach difficulties, and anxiety. 

Muscle relaxants may cause drowsiness and a person taking them should not operate motor vehicles when taking them.

Anagelsics are medicines such as Tylonel, Tylonel with codeine, Vicoden, and Darven and Oltram.  

Sleep medications can be addictive.  A medication called Ambian is thought to be less habit forming.  This medication has fewer side effects, no known drug interactions, and is well tolerated.  However  this medication should not be taken more than two or three times a week.

Topical creams may also be helpful by relieve pain thus enabling a person to get better sleep.  Zostrix and Aurum or examples of topical creams that help relieve pain from symptoms such as arthritis.

There are natural medications as well such as the following:  melatonin, chamomile, valerian, karva karva, a tryptophan.  Anyone considering using conventional or natural medications should consult their doctor to determine which medications are right for them.
