Dreaming
By Dave Kettner

According to Hindu tradition there are three levels of consciousness – waking, dreamless and dreamful sleep.  The tradition goes on to say that, in order to live in balance and harmony, we must optimize our experience of all three.  Although we might thing that dreaming is unimportant, by depriving ourselves of the REM sleep, scientists have been able to prove that if we do not dream we become irritable, vague, easily fatigued and have a hard time remembering things.  This discovery just goes to show that dreaming is just as important as getting the itself.

A dream happens while we are sleeping and it is an unconscious experience of images, sounds and other sensations.  Some dreams are impossible and can take the dreamer great distances over a very short period of time.  Other dreams, like lucid dreams are extremely real and the sleeper can realize that they are dreaming while in the dream.

Dreams occur once we have reached the REM phase of sleep.  During that time a chemical called Dimethyltryptamine is released from the brain.  This chemical acts like a hallucinogen and creates dreams.  The only

time this chemical is released in our brains is during REM and right before death.

Dreams have been used since the beginning of time to predict events, inspire art and help us explore the inner consciousness of our minds.  Dreams have always been a mystery of content, lights, images and sounds.  Many times our dreams do not reflect our ‘real’ lives and they are a passage way to our subconscious.

Since dreams are vivid, yet fleeting (it’s almost impossible to force yourself into a designated dream.)  humans have been trying to interpret their meanings since the beginning of time.  The interpretation of dreams has been studied by every major religion and dream dedicated scientific group.

If you would like to analyise your dreams, keep a dream journal.  The best way to do this is to keep a journal or even some pieces of paper next to your bed.  When you wake up in the morning you should be able to recall most of your dream.  The longer you wait to record the dream, the less details you will remember.  Keep the journal for an extended period of time and read through it ever so often to look for dream patterns.
